ASU Sun Devil Stadium Reinvention

Trinity Works was hired as the Owner’s Representative of the Sun Devil Stadium Reinvention Project by the ASU Foundation to work directly for Sun Devil Athletics. Trinity Works and Ray Anderson arrived within a month of each other and began reverse engineering an already pre-determined budget set to the project. With full support from Sun Devil Athletics, the largest construction project in school history would soon become the evolution of a football stadium into a year-round 365 Community Union.

In the New American University model, a football stadium is used 365 days a year, as opposed to 2% (6 games) of a year at the average university. A football stadium is viewed as a community asset, not an athletics’ asset and this seemingly simple and shifting perspective is where innovation lies, and implementation becomes challenging.

In 2017, the project team hit pause on Phase 3 of construction to reinvent the east sideline as a multi-function building. The East Sideline Club is now 12,000 SF interior, event space capable of hosting lectures and banquets for 500, and other exhibitions, marriage ceremonies, conferences, and cocktail parties. Additionally, 4,000 SF of interior space was added to the east upper concourse to serve as another lecture, exhibition, or party event space. Nestled underneath the upper deck seating, 11,000 SF of office, incubation space will be home to the Pat Tillman Veteran’s Center, Global Sport Institute and Public Service Academy.

365 Community Union has evolved from a small student committee to a campus wide initiative between donors, faculty, and the student body. In the Fall of 2014, the question was asked to the students, “If the building was open 24/7, how would you use it?” The students replied with the ideas that sparked the conversation and are already being implemented today. The W. P. Carey School of Business and The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts performed three, 10-day cluster competitions with the 365 Community Union as the subject property. Ideas ranged from Central Park to a bowling alley on the west upper concourse. The innovation of the students ignited the university’s abandon conventional thinking and build a university asset.

The 365 Community Union will expand the stadium’s activity beyond football into a multi-functioning, year-round anchor to the 350-acre Novus Innovation Corridor and The New American University.
